CARES
Centre for Agroecology and Regeneration for the Semi-Arid
How can we produce food while regenerating degraded semiarid ecosystems?
This is the purpose of the Centre for Agroecology and Regeneration for the Semi-Arid (CARES). Located in Horta da Malhadinha, CARES is an applied research center that develops food sovereignty solutions by applying agroforestry practices nspired by nature.
Through innovative practices in the semiarid climate, CARES aims to regenerate soil vitality, prevent erosion, use water efficiently, all while producing nutrient rich food for the local food system.
CARES also has a nursery that propagates resilient seedlings and plants adapted to the challenges of the mediterranean semiarid landscape. By doing this, we can disseminate the regeneration of tomorrow and advance the agroecological transition of this territory.
The Technical Core
CARES is the technical core of Terra Sintrópica, where solutions are prepared for replicability in other territories and at different scales. Sharing know-how is therefore part of the identity of CARES. Immersive learning programs, workshops, consultancy and hosting volunteers are some of the ways in which CARES disseminates tested practices with local and regional farmers, and also with other territories that are fighting desertification, erosion or other climate challenges.
CARES is a Living Lab that seeks to find concrete answers for local and global challenges, such as climate change, always applying ethical principles that are inspired by nature. This research and development, learning and production space is essential for the agroecological transition in the territory.
