Forest-Gardens
Ecologia aplicada nas escolas de Mértola
Seedling the future
Developed in collaboration with the Mértola Municipal Council and currently underway in five public primary schools in the municipality, the Forest Gardens are a key project of Terra Sintrópica. Through 180 yearly sessions of extracurricular activities, this project sows the seeds of future regeneration, starting with the children of the territory.
In each gesture—sowing, watering, harvesting, pruning—a new relationship with nature, with food, and with the place they inhabit is fostered. Children learn to observe the living cycles of the ecosystem that surrounds them, developing curiosity, a sense of belonging, and care for the territory.
The Forest Gardens involve the entire school community — children, families, teachers, assistants, and local partners — transforming into vibrant spaces for learning and connection. They are seeds of collective transformation, essential for inspiring an agroecological transition rooted in caring for the land and for one another, today and for generations to come.

Life in Syntropy.
“The forest gardens are a living laboratory that encourages autonomous observation of nature where children plant, care for, harvest, and eat the results of their cultivation. But students don’t just learn how to create a garden; they learn to confront and, above all, reverse the environmental impacts of our society. It is an opportunity to promote education in service of the development of sustainable human communities.”
