Mértola Forest Perimeter Plots
Regenerando a floresta de Mértola
A process testing innovative ecological restoration approaches for monoculture forests
CC Desert was a project dedicated to researching and experimenting with innovative solutions to the challenge of desertification in southern Portugal.
In Mértola, the project was implemented in three pilot areas, with a total area of approximately 4 hectares, distributed between the Mértola Forest Perimeter (PFM) and the Horta da Malhadinha. In the PFM, Terra Sintrópica’s intervention focused on the reconversion of acacia and eucalyptus monoculture forests into biodiverse and productive forest systems, through the implementation of successional agroforestry systems.
a resilient living mosaic
After the conclusion of the project, the regenerative process in the PFM continues with the support of the Mértola municipality. Through strategic pruning, new tree plantations and continuous technical support, the future of diverse and resilient forest continues to be built.
Our intervention in the PFM proposes an alternative approach that recognizes the functional role of often-villified plant species when integrated into an ecological design adapted to the ecological needs of the territory.
We aim to create an approach that creates a replicable model for the forest reconversion of degraded areas and/or exotic monocultures to other territories subject to challenges such as water scarcity, fire risk, and increased extreme weather events.
