CARES - Center for Agroecology and Regeneration for the Semiarid Region

(Re)learning the ways of knowing and practicing an agro-ecological metabolism, combining productive capacity with the preservation of natural resources.

This is the purpose of the Agroecology and Regeneration Center for the Semi-Arid, an aggregating hub based on a network governance model, with the Horta da Malhadinha as a space for experimentation, monitoring and demonstration.

A space where different forms of agricultural production to which ecological bases are recognized take place, creating dynamic systems that approximate the structure and function of natural ecosystems.

Systems that allow the expansion of knowledge about the resilience of practices in a semi-arid context, preserving and rebuilding soil fertility, preventing erosion, using water in a rational and efficient way, contributing to the maintenance of nutrients in the system, valuing and conserving biological diversity, minimizing the production of greenhouse gases, and facilitating human adaptation to climate change.

This transformation is only possible if this challenge is addressed on three simultaneous fronts:

- with more knowledge, ensuring principles that can be used to design and manage sustainable agroecosystems;

- with the promotion of effective and innovative practices that can be demonstrated, helping farmers to make decisions that are better suited to their contextual reality;

- with community awareness, activating the means for these changes to take place.

As a living laboratory, this is the purpose of the Center for Agroecology and Regeneration for the Semiarid, training, mentoring and co-creating the agroecological transition that we urgently need to implement.
